Cancun (ABC Live):With Mary Robinson as the moderator, world woman leaders talked about Climate Change and its relation with women at Pavillion Monarca, located at Cancunmesse venue. Chancellor Patricia Espinosa Cantellano, Mexico’s Secretary of Foreign Affairs and president of the COP16/CMP6 invited attendants to include women in the negotiations in favor of climatic justice.
“We have to provide women with education and technology and we need to make sure that those technologies are being used in the proper manner,” said Christiana Figueres, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
“This is a world of contradictions, we see all women suffering of the effects of climate change, but at the same time we see that women have a huge power of change”, said María Fernanda Espinosa. She added that “women are powerful agents of change”.
“We should make climate and climate issues much more understandable to people”, said Connie Hedegaard, European Comissioner for Climate Action.
Finally Lykke Friis, Minister for Climate and Energy of Denmark said that she was proud that the last two presidents of the COP have been women, COP15 and COP16, and was pleased that for COP17 it is also a woman.
